Wellness Isn't Enough When Our Community Is Under Attack

Today, we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice — and I want to make a distinction. I’m choosing to hold space for the Black lives sacrificed to a country that still denies the rights of the very people who serve it.

I’ve been unraveling lately — slowly, quietly, and in ways I didn’t want to admit.

Practicing wellness while trying to stay well is already a challenge, but what’s happening in this country has been pulling at my seams in a way I can’t ignore anymore.

Black people and America have history. That’s not new.

But the weight of that history feels different right now, and staying silent about it has been sitting wrong in my spirit. So, this week's rejooovism is shifting — maybe permanently — because wellness has never been about just meditation and journaling. What it is, is awareness. It’s truth. It’s community care.

So, let’s talk about what’s happening beneath our noses. The Supreme Court recently weakened Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act — a move that opened the door for several southern states to redraw districts in ways that dilute the Black vote. In response, the NAACP is urging Black students, athletes, and fans to reconsider supporting PWIs in those states.

Translation: the Black vote is under attack.

Whether you believe in voting or not, there is a reason why folks who were voted into government are working hard to take your power away. That alone should tell you something about your right to vote.

But this isn’t a “go vote” post. We’re past that.

This is about the wellness of our community — mentally, emotionally, spiritually.

Because when we're well, we can think clearly:

We can organize.

We can strategize.

We can protect ourselves.

We can build.

My belief is simple: When we heal individually, we strengthen collectively. When we strengthen collectively, we become unshakeable.

You can’t expect things to change if you don’t.

So, rejooov with me.

Here’s where I’m shifting gears. Along with subscribing to the newsletter (now monthly), you can join our IG wellness circle, Wellness for Resistance — a space where we process current events through a wellness lens, share verified information, and stay connected to the work happening in our communities.

And if you want to take action right now, here are a few non‑partisan steps you can take (please confirm details with trusted sources):

  • Check your voter registration status

  • Learn how redistricting affects your district

  • Understand your rights at the polls

  • Help others get IDs, transportation, or information

  • Report voter suppression: 1‑866‑OUR‑VOTE

If any of the thoughts I shared today resonated with you, let me know!
