Happy Monday, fam!
I hope you had a solid weekend — one that energized you to get up and do something good for your mental, physical, and spiritual.
Last week, I created a wellness circle, Wellness for Resistance, a safe space for Black people to come together to process current events and lean on wellness practices off the strength of community. Because doing it solo can be overwhelming.
If you're interested in joining the community, comment ALIGN below.
What compelled me to create this wellness circle were the recent events happening in government: the rolling back of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, new moves to further dilute the Black vote, and the NAACP asking college students and fans to stop supporting southern colleges.
Moving forward, I’ll be sharing current events in these rejooovisms to keep them relevant to the times — while also sharing my thoughts on how we can better the Black community in the face of them.
Current Events You Should Know
The NAACP’s boycott against Tennessee, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, and Georgia is in full swing.
Freedom Summer has officially been launched for Juneteenth mobilization.
The Congressional Black Caucus & Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights have called on Corporate America to clearly state where they stand on voting rights, equal opportunities, and civil rights protections.
Voting rights groups are successfully pushing back against efforts to reinstate a discriminatory congressional map in Alabama.
I'm in a better headspace because of these updates. It just goes to show you that even when you feel like there’s nothing you can do, there’s someone out there who refuses to do nothing.
It’s okay to put faith in your community.
It’s not okay to fall into apathy or disconnect.
But do you know what breaks a community down faster than apathy ever could?
Being a hater.
Because a hater will tell you the NAACP asking young people to apply pressure is a bad move.
A hater will tell you protesting doesn’t work.
A hater will tell you voting doesn’t matter.
What “Hating” the Community Actually Looks Like
Fake concern — pretending to care about the community’s “health” just to say something nasty.
“Police brutality sucks, but we have to stop killing one another first.”
Superiority — pointing out flaws to feel above the community.
“If most Black people weren’t so ghetto and unruly, they wouldn’t be at the bottom.”
Deflection or gaslighting — manipulating facts to avoid accountability.
“Slavery happened 400 years ago. It’s our own fault we’re still at the bottom.”
Jokes as weapons — using humor to say what you really mean.
“You ain’t really Black if…”
& We “don’t need no hateration, holleration, in this dancerie.”
Why Haters Show Up This Way
They all have something in common: internalized racism, which is a wellness issue. It’s disheartening to hear skinfolk (who aren’t always kinfolk) talk about our communities in a negative light, no matter the circumstances. So, let’s be clear about another thing: A hater is not your enemy — their conditioning is.
Because internalized racism doesn’t show up out of nowhere.
It’s learned.
It’s absorbed.
It’s rewarded by systems that benefit when Black people distrust, dismiss, or disrespect one another.
So, when you’re dealing with this type of hater, you’re not fighting a person — you’re confronting a mindset. Navigating that without losing your peace, your purpose, or your power is imperative.
