Your Peace Shouldn’t Be This Easy to Disturb

I took a lil’ breaky break and didn’t post a rejooovism last week — because how can I preach the importance of rest while refusing to take my own advice?

And honestly, the time away from my laptop brought a flood of ideas I can’t wait to share with you throughout the rest of the year.

The biggest one: How the moments we interpret as “problems” can shape who we become entirely.

I was talking to my man the other day about how letting your emotions guide your reactions can turn you into someone who lacks personality — simply because you allow how you feel to dictate how you move.

Here at The Rejooov Collective, I harp on the notion that Black people share a unique attachment to wellness because our wellness is correlated to our awareness. The more aware we are, the stronger our wellness practices must be to protect our total health.

That awareness helps us navigate systemic challenges and leverage community resources — but none of that matters if your wellness foundation isn’t strong enough to keep you stable.

And that same logic applies to the issues we face individually.

Think about all the times you let one bad moment sour your entire mood. That’s because focusing on the little things is one of the fastest ways to ignore all the good happening around you.

It leaves you:

  • chronically stressed,

  • drains your emotional energy,

  • skews your perspective,

  • damages relationships,

  • and chips away at your self‑control.

You become so concerned with what’s happening to you that you forget to check what’s happening within you.

At your big grown age, a slight setback shouldn’t be enough to ruin your entire day.

I mean, I’m all for the dramatics when it comes to my list of pet peeves, but honey… if your list is the length of a CVS receipt, I just KNOW you’re hard‑pressed for a good day.

And to rejooov is to commit to having more good days.

So, what does The Rejooov Collective recommend?

Introducing Principle #3: Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff.

Easier said than done — I know.

But for the sake of your health, stop fretting over things that won’t matter in a week.

You won’t even remember them.

Maybe you have road rage.

Maybe you pay too much attention to someone’s tone.

Maybe the person you held the door for didn’t say thank you.

Maybe the neighbor you waved at didn’t wave back.

And now you’re upset.

I get it.

But here’s how we shift.

Choosing (yes, choosing) not to sweat the small stuff means choosing to move on from the moment. It’s how you stay in control of how your emotions affect you. This principle encourages us to stop letting insignificant matters take up space in our lives — because we have bigger fish to fry.

So, let’s Rejooov:

Reset — Acknowledge your emotions & how you let them affect you

Principle #2: Get some self‑control

  • Reflect on how letting your emotions speak for you has affected you in the past

  • Learn what triggers you

  • Negotiate with yourself the benefits of controlling how the little things affect you

Restart — Determine what steps you can take to change

Principle #9: Embrace the change that challenge can bring

  • Examine your opportunities for growth — is this something you can change?

  • Establish a planned reaction for when triggers show up (breathwork, stepping away, grounding)

  • Strategize your success by weighing the pros and cons of making this change

Refocus — Consider what aligns with your goals

Principle #4: Peace of mind is never too far

  • Revisit what makes you happy

  • Specify what you want to accomplish

  • Articulate your intentions out loud — or write them down

Bonus:

Read Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff — and It’s All Small Stuff by Richard Carlson.

This book helped shift my perspective on how I interact with the insignificant things.

It’s a quick, easy, and impactful read.
