We're A Community in Shambles

That is such a bleak title for a day meant to celebrate the life and work of a man that did all he could to set the black community up for success, but hey, it's just the way I see it.
Color me a pessimist, but I do have a theory as to why it is the way it is.
Happy MLK DAY, nonetheless!
While in the 50's our communities fought for basic equality, I don't think wellness was ever our community's top priority... and even still, today, for most, survival is. Yep, it's 2026 and a lot of us are still trying to survive. Still trying to make a way out of no way. Think about it. We prioritize everything but our health and while I know that isn't intentional it is still detrimental to the wellbeing of our community as a whole, not just the individual.
I won't go into how systemic racism, socioeconomic inequalities, straight up discrimination, implicit biases, healthcare access and the mere quality of care we receive has impacted more than just the health of POC in America (and if you don't know how, take some time to educate yourself, read a book. Do it for MLK), but I will speak to why I feel that wellness is how we counteract these issues.
Crazy right? I can see you, side eyeing this theory and mumbling to yourself, "So what? We should be fighting the injustices of this world with meditation?" Lol, kinda. But that also speaks to my theory. I don't believe that black folks are lacking an understanding of what total wellness is.
The issue lies in the implementation of total wellness practices in our daily lives.
Such as,
Are you eating to nourish and fuel yourself or do you eat just to feel full?
Are you moving in ways that heal, or do you neglect the only way to appreciate your body?
Are your actions in alignment with your values or are you contradicting your own beliefs?
The way I see it, we all have an idea of what it takes to be healthy. Yet a lot of us don't know enough about ourselves to even attempt behaving in ways that truly transforms us for the better. It's this lack of self-knowledge that subjects us to fall into mindsets and habits that do anything but serve us.
Our blackness says something to others that we will never comprehend because it's incomprehensible and we've been forced to allow outside beliefs to shape how we interact with our own health. When we rejooov we take on the full responsibility of our health by learning our bodies, advocating for ourselves, and using our understanding to be better so that we can successfully build up our communities.
My dream is a healthier black community. & what makes a dream reality is the action put forth to make it happen. So, join the rejooov collective, and allow me to show you how to rejooov as I work to grow and better my community the best way I can.
Tell me what you think of my theories in the comments below.
